Parents and residents alike agree that Measure S is needed to support our local schools. Here’s some of what your neighbors are saying:
I strongly urge your support for Measure S for Soquel and Capitola schools. By working together, parents, teachers, and the community can keep local schools strong. Please vote Yes on Measure S.
- Bill Monning, California State Senator
The demands of the gobal workforce of 21st century will require our children to be highly educated. Measure S will gives us the opportunity to compete.
- Henry J Castaniada, Superintendent
We have excellent schools in Capitola and Soquel, and student achievement continues to rise. We need to pass Measure S to protect strong academic programs in reading, writing, math and science and to ensure our students continue to receive a great education.
- Troy Chasey, Soquel Elementary Parent
Measure S requires strong fiscal accountability. An independent citizens’ oversight committee will oversee Measure S expenditures and help guarantee that no funds will be spent on administrators’ and that every penny is spent to protect quality education in our schools.
Our schools are one of the key reasons people move to our community. Our schools help make this a wonderful place to live, and they help to protect property values for all of us. I hope you join me in voting YES on S — for our students and for our community.
As a teacher, I look forward to the passage of Measure S to help relieve the negative impacts of years of budget cuts from Sacramento. Our students deserve better, and so do we!
- NBMS Teacher Dave Brodkey
Measure S gives our community funding to pick up where the state consistently falls short. It would get class sizes back to a level where teachers can engage all students, provide growth and opportunities for advanced students, and ensure all students continue to receive strong academic instruction.
- Soquel Elementary Home & School Club President and Capitola resident Tory Tupper DelFavero
We moved to the area 11 years ago so our kids could attend the schools in this district. We’ve seen far too much money taken from our schools by the state. Measure S will bring sorely-needed stable local funding to our schools.
- Santa Cruz Gardens residents Amanda & Andy Miller
Measure S will give back small class sizes that our teachers need to excel at teaching our children.
- Maria Parish
We need Measure S to support our children and teachers. As a parent with a child in the school district, I have seen firsthand how lack of sufficient funding directly impacts the quality of education children are receiving. It is not because of a lack of parental involvement, effort by the teachers or the like. In my experience, everyone is going above and beyond in an effort to fix gaps in education due to lack of funding. No amount of involvement by parents and teachers can overcome the sheer number of children in each classroom.
- Kathleen Chasey, Parent and Local Small Business Owner
As both a parent and classified employee in Soquel School District I have seen the drastic cuts that have come to our district in the last 15 years. I have had children at every school in our district. I support this measure 100%. This will make our district go from a good district to a great district. An investment in our childrens future has a priceless value.
- Cory Montanez
I don’t completely agree with how the government spends its tax money, at least Measure S will allow me to direct some of that spending towards what I value.
- Jim Donaldson, Soquel Elementary Parent
I want my daughter to have the same school resources I had growing up. If Measure S passes she’ll also have smaller class size, quality teachers, and exposure to The Arts.
- Caroline, Main St. Elementary Parent
More funding for our local Schools means more programs and better teachers. It makes our community that much richer to have great schools.
- Ari Lessin
Even community members without children in our schools benefit from local funding for great schools – crime goes down and property values rise!
- Rose Filicetti, Former school board member
I fully support our parents in their effort to improve our schools and make our community a better place to live.
- Phil Rodriguez, Board Trustee SUESD
The passage of Measure S will help to insure that SUESD students are well prepared for success at Soquel High School and other local secondary schools.
- Gary Bloom, Superintendent, SCCS
Sanford’s Martial Arts believes in the importance of quality education for our community’s children. We feel Measure S will increase that quality.
- Sean Sanford, Instructor, Sanford’s martial Arts
Our public school system open to all is what makes our nation great: our system works only if we have an educated citizenry – and even though my children have all graduated, I am a supporter of Measure S and investment in our future.
- Deb Howard, Proud Soquel Resident
Measure S is not just important, it’s critical. Our children deserve smaller class sizes, talented teachers, updated education tools, libraries, music, art and more. Our schools are good but we need this local funding to make them great. EVERYBODY in the community benefits when schools are great.
- Teresa Huntley, Parent
Measure S gives our community a chance to make our schools even better than they already are for our children. Our students deserve the best that we can provide for them. Join me and vote yes on measure S.
- Craig Broadhurst, Principal, New Brighton Middle School
The Schools of the SUESD District are a valuable asset for our community. They deserve our support community wide. Cutbacks in federal and state funding make it hard to continue the same success on smaller budgets. We can help them through these scarce time with this tax, we are proud to be able to help.
- Mary Michael McTeague, Former Parent,NBMS Site Council Member
The Thomas Kinkade Capitola Gold Signature Gallery has loved and supported our local schools. Measure S makes sure that our schools make up for the Sacramento budget cuts with every penny staying here in Capitola and Soquel. Our schools are the bridge to our city’s future.
- Steven Austen, Owner Thomas Kinkade Capitola Gold Signature Gallery
Please keep our wonderful Capitola and Soquel schools strong.
- Bobbette Moore, Owner The Village Mouse Gift Shop
Having served as a trustee for over 14 years, I can attest to the fact that we need to pass this parcel tax. Can any of you imagine planning a business or household budget, entering into contracts, then simply crossing your fingers in hope that the money will appear as promised? Well, that’s the picture of CA education over the last decade and I don’t see it changing much for the better. Prop 30 saved us from cutting more, but did not re-instate the lost funds needed to provide the desired educational experience to our 1800 students. Please support me and my family in voting for the stability that Measure S will bring to the students of Soquel Elementary District.
- Judy McGooden, SUESD Trustee
I have been an educator in the Soquel Union Elementary School District since 1995. We have experienced a severe decline in our funding base that began eight years ago. The passage of Proposition 30 helped alleviate the continued decline in funding for our schools. However, in order to move forward as we implement Common Core Standards and incorporate more technology in our schools, we will need the funding that Measure S will bring to the district. I urge all voters in the school district to vote “Yes on Measure S” and please mail your ballot today!
- Julie Ebert, New Brighton Middle School Assistant Principal
This is a MUST for quality public education!!
- Steve Trujillo, trustee, santa cruz city school districts
